Building the Foundation for Your Tiny Home

The beginning stages of
designing and constructing
a tiny house all start with the foundation. There are generally three types of foundations to consider based on building location, budget and preference - raised timber frame, on grade and pier. Before picking one,
research tiny house designs
to determine your desired method of construction and materials.
Raised Timber Frame

A raised timber frame is a wooden base
used for off-grid tiny house applications
, typically on slopes, open grounds or weaker soil. It is a platform spanning multiple beams that support other framing and flooring components. The location of the tiny house will determine the requirement for posts to support the raised timber frame.
On Grade Tiny House Foundation

The On grade tiny house foundation is perfect for a flat land location and involves pouring a slab. It also serves as a much stronger foundation when compared to a traditional on-ground foundation. The slab should be insulated from either the outside or underneath to prevent moisture and temperature transfer.
Pier Foundation

The Pier foundation is great for various terrains and involves multiple posts that hold structural support beams. Although not as strong as the on grade foundation, it provides very good support for a tiny house. It is often used as a good solution for areas prone to flooding, which is often the case for beach locations.
To get the best out of these methods, it’s important to
hire a professional
that has the skills to identify the most effective solution for your tiny house design project. Doing so helps create a solid foundation and keeps you up to code.
