Overview of the Original White House Plan
The origination of the White House was the result of the first President of the United States, George Washington. President Washington appointed an architect named James Hoban to draw plans for the executive mansion. The
original White House plan
was based on a design from a 1790 ‘public competition’ which specified a two-story residence with a large central room on the first floor and smaller rooms on the second floor.
The
White House plan
has changed significantly over time, and throughout different Presidential periods. Thomas Jefferson rearranged the interior layout of the executive mansion to reflect the style during his time as President. However, it was not until the mid 1800s that the White House began taking on its modern day look. Room additions were made by President Benjamin Harrison, and the iconic bright sandstone exterior was added by President William Henry Harrison. Further additions were also made in the late 1800s during the Grover Cleveland Presidency.
Rooms and Conservatories
The White House is composed of numerous rooms, including six private family rooms. Five of these are in the east wing and include the Yellow Oval Room, the President’s Room, and the Lincoln Bedroom. The president’s office is also in the east wing and is accessed from the elevator there. Besides the family areas, there are at least 132 guest and staff rooms. These include offices, an exhibition hall, a conservatory, a movie theater, a swimming pool, and a bowling alley.
Modern day Additions
Modern-day additions were made to the White House during the administration of Franklin D. Roosevelt, such as the West Wing with its emergency presidential bunker; and, during the George W. Bush presidency, the South Lawn was remodeled, and a press briefing room was added. The White House Visitor Center, which was opened in 2001, is a great way to learn more about the executive mansion and its history.
Protection
As one of the most iconic US landmarks, the White House is – understandably – well-protected from potential threats. Today, it is guarded 24/7 by Secret Service agents and police officers from the US Park Police. Visiting the White House requires advanced planning as security measures unavoidably slow the process. It is important to note that only US citizens are allowed to take a tour, and a fee is required for other visitor services.
