The Design of the Dancing House
The Dancing House is an impressive example of modern architectural design. Located in the heart of Prague, it stands out from the surrounding traditional architecture with its unique and dramatic form. Designed by Vlado Milunic and Frank Gehry, the structure of the building utilizes a classical technique known as the ‘gherkin’, which allows the structure to look like it is ‘dancing’ atop its foundation.
The style of the building is a blend of the modern and the classical, with curved and angular lines. It has been lovingly referred to as the ‘Fred and Ginger’ building, after the popular dance duo Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, and it is easy to see why!
The building consists of two main sections – a tower section and a podium section. The tower section features a curved glass façade and the podium section features a glass wall surrounding a terrace. This modular approach allows for more dedicated areas for retail or office space, and for different sections to be used for different purposes.
The interior of the building is just as impressive as the exterior. The interior is structured as a series of interconnecting courtyards, outdoor spaces and gardens that help to create an inviting and pleasant atmosphere.
Plans and Sections
The design of the Dancing House is such that it has been highly detailed in the plans and sections of the structure. These plans and sections provide a comprehensive view of the building, showing all the areas of the structure and how they fit together.
The plans provide an insight into the design of the building, including the various stairs, balconies, and access points. The sections give an indication of the size and features of various areas of the building, providing an insight into the overall design intent and details.
Together, the plans and sections of the Dancing House show how the structure has been designed to provide an impressive aesthetic experience while also being structurally sound and safe.
