What Could Cause Interior Doors Sticking At the Top?
It's never something too concerning when interior doors stick occasionally when opening or closing them, but when it regularly becomes an issue it's time to investigate what could be the cause. In some cases, this problem can be caused by misalignment of the hinges or the doorframe, while in others, the construction or environment are factors. Regardless, the good news is that sticking doors at the top can usually be easily remedied.
Sagging Doors
In many cases, mild misalignment of an interior door is caused by a sagging door. If the jamb has settled out of alignment, it can cause the door to rub against the top jamb and be difficult to open. If the door hinge screws have loosened, it may allow the door to sag, which can also cause the door to stick at the top.
Warped Doors
The construction of a door, including its materials, can be a factor in door sticking problems. If the door is made of a wood veneer, the heat or humidity in your home can cause it to expand and contract over time, triggering the door sticking at the top issue. If the door is made from solid wood, then the wood may have dried and warped, causing scraping against the jamb and a sticking issue.
Other Reasons
It's also possible that the top of the door has picked up a ding or is otherwise damaged. If the door has been painted multiple times, it can build up a sheen that will cause friction against the jamb and cause the sticking issue. In addition, the weatherstripping or the threshold can be misaligned, allowing for air to pass through and for the door to rub against the jamb.
